For millennia women have been exchanging ideas and trying new methods to boost their chances of having a child of a predetermined gender. For this article we will focus on how to conceive a girl. If you want to have a boy there are other methods to use.
Some people may want to know how to get pregnant with a girl using more traditional techniques but for this post I will focus mostly on the more scientific methods.
Since the dawn of the modern science of embryology scientists and researchers across the globe have worked hard to come up with a number of methods for gender selection – both natural and artificial.
The existing scientific consensus is very clear; the chances of conceiving a boy or a girl are exactly equal with each pregnancy. Although certain couples only seem to conceive girls while other couples have only boys this pattern has more to do with luck than anything else.
This may actually be good news. If the chances of having a boy or girl are equal then taking even small steps to help predetermine the sex of your yet-to-be conceived baby you will tip the scales of fate to put the odds much more in your favour.
Is it really possible to choose your baby’s gender?
When deliberately embarking on a quest to get pregnant with a girl many couples will take the first step of selecting a particular technique of gender selection and employ that 1 method in an endeavor to get pregnant with a child of their desired gender.
This is a good step but as I mentioned above every couple has a 50/50 chance of having either a boy or a girl and when you take deliberate, proven, steps to help you have a girl you tip the odds in your favour. So why would you chose only 1 method when there are many?
If it is really just a game of mathematics, and probabilities, then by doing as many things as you can to help you conceive a girl you will give yourself a better chance of achieving that aim with every extra method you use.
But remember that the most ideal techniques are those that suit you best. Don’t try to use every single method or technique if it becomes
Myths About How a Baby’s Gender is Determined
There are some misconceptions regarding the actual mechanics behind baby gender determination.
It is important to bear in mind that the man is the one who determines the gender of the child – always.
Why is this?
Well men carry an X (girl) chromosome and a Y (boy) chromosome, whereas women only ever carry two X chromosomes.
The second myth that is still surprisingly prevalent in some societies is that men who father girls are somehow less masculine than those who father boys. I know…crazy …right?!
Another myth is that one of the man’s testicles only produces X sperm, while the other one produces Y sperm.
The truth is that when X chromosome sperm reaches the ovary a girl fetus will be formed but if the Y chromosome fertilizes the egg first then a boy will conceived.
The bad new is that Y chromosome sperm swim faster than X chromosome ones. For this reason it is often easier to deliberately conceive a boy because Y chromosome sperm needs very little help to boost its chances of reaching the ovary first.
So how do we shift the odds in favour of an X chromosome ovary fertilization?
Natural or Unnatural Ways to Conceive a Girl?
The Ways for deliberate gender assignment during conception can be classified into two main groups – natural and artificial (unnatural).
The methods from the first category are referred to as natural because they involve the use of time-tested techniques that incorporate diet, sex positions and a number of different factors that can be easily controlled by the the man and woman seeking pregnancy without needing to rely on modern 21st science to help.
The techniques and methods used in the second category are referred to as artificial because 21st Century scientific knowledge and modern day equipment are used to ensure the conception occurs in a way that ensures the gender of the child is chosen rather than allowing it to be random.
Some women would rather learn how to conceive a girl naturally while others are fine with using a more modern approach.
If you are looking for tips for ways to get pregnant with a girl, you should understand that the success rate when using artificial techniques is generally higher than when using the natural methods. However, the gender of a prospective baby cannot be 100% guaranteed by any method or technique. You are basically just putting the odds more in your favour but for most people this is enough reason to try.
How to Conceive a Girl Naturally
Although I have covered ways to get pregnant with a girl naturally in more detail in another posts I will quickly outline the main methods here for convenience.
There are four main areas in which natural methods are more advantageous than their artificial equivalents:
- They are much less expensive. In fact, in many cases they are free to use.
- There is no need for medical supervision. They can be used at home and no attendance at a medical facility is required.
- They are simple and private. Artificial methods tend to be applied only in healthcare facilities and are administered by strangers. For some women this can be embarrassing.
Of course there are also major disadvantages to choosing natural methods over artificial ones.
- If you plan to use a natural method during conception you should be aware that these kinds of gender selection methods have not been scientifically proven and hence scientists and doctors don’t put much faith in them.
- Although The Shettles Method, a technique that takes a more natural approach, claims to have an 75-80% success rate for girls and an 80-85% for a boy these claims have not been verified in clinical trials and may not be accurate.
- Artificial methods for gender selection are much more effective and have been clinically tested.
Popular Diets to Conceive a Girl
As outlined in a previous post there are ways a prospective mother can use diet for gender selection. The most popular technique, which was inspired by a comparable finding in zoology, was discovered experimentally by Drs. Jacques Lorrain and Joseph Stolkowski in 1980. It is believed to be a fairly successful technique with a 81% success rate recorded in a clinical trial.
Lorrain & Stolkowski
Presently, there multiple dietary approaches for baby gender selection however the key ideas they promote are usually taken directly from the work of Dr. Stolkowski and Dr. Lorrain.
Although we mentioned the main reasons for a female to use diet for baby gender selection in the post mentioned above according to the Stolkowski & Lorrain’s theory there are actually specific foods which both partners should eat not just the woman.
This shared diet should be rich in calcium and magnesium but low in sodium and potassium in order to create more favourable environments for the “female creating” sperm to fertilize the ovary. It is worth mentioning again that the good doctors insist that this particular diet should be followed by both the potential mother and the potential father.
This natural method of gender selection, which has its roots firmly set in the scientific community, will be explained in detail later in this article.
Eat More Fruits and Vegetables
One study has shown that you can improve your odds of conceiving a girl by merely eating more fruit and vegetables. There are also a growing number of people who believe that a vegetarian, and especially a vegan, diet can be helpful when it comes to conceiving a girl.
Foods that are said to be especially beneficial are:
Other foods that are allegedly good for conceiving baby girls are leafy greens along with a variety of fruits and rice, which are naturally rich in calcium and magnesium.
Eat Acidic Food
X-chromosome and Y-Chromosome sperm prefer different environments. It is suggested that you consume acidic foods in the pre-ovulation days. Male sperms are most unlikely to survive in acidic surroundings.
Your vaginal pH value can actually be altered to create an undesirable environment for male sperm simply by eating acidic foods. Get a good supply of soda, vinegar and chocolate but you should bear in mind that it is not healthy to put your body in an acidic condition for too long a period.
Several people are convinced that you should also keep off alkaline foods as much as possible. Foods such as almonds, apples, avocados and cucumbers in the days before ovulation should be avoided. Again bear in mind that these food types offer the body very important nutrition and abstaining from them for long periods is not advised.
In fact, having a healthy infant and adequate folate in your body to prevent defects in the neural tube should to be of more importance than gender selection so use this technique with caution.
Proponents of the diet say that the success rate is about 70% though there is zero scientific research to support this claim.
Low Salt Diet
Having a diet that is low in salt is not only a very healthy option but is said to increase your probabilities of conceiving a girl. Therefore, you should try to cut out overly salted foods less obvious examples include:
- processed meats
- blue cheese
Also, ensure that you limit the quantity of salt used during cooking and try to eliminate it altogether as most foods come with adequate amounts of salt when you buy them. This will also be useful after pregnancy if you are breast-feeding.
Of 21 women who tried this diet in a clinical trial in Maastricht University in Holland 16 of them conceived girls.
Deep penetration is said to be key when a couple wants a boy, while the opposite is true for a girl.
Having intercourse in the missionary position allegedly increases your odds of conceiving a girl. This is because it restricts the extent of penetration, thereby limiting the sperms access to the cervix. Since boy sperm (X-chromosome) swim very swiftly [explained later in this article] for short periods you can prevent them from reaching the egg for fertilization before the girl sperm (Y -chromosome) by avoiding deep penetration.
Female orgasm usually discharges an alkaline secretion that might help boy sperm to survive for a longer period by creating a friendly environment. In the absence of these secretions, it can be more difficult for boy sperm to survive.
Don’t Restrict Your Sex Life
When trying to conceive a girl, you should have more sex instead of limiting your sex life. This is particularly important during your pre-planned conception window.
Having more sex will lower the sperm count of your partner resulting in a reduction in the quick-swimming boy sperm available to compete for fertilization.
Many well qualified members of the medical and scientific community have proposed that the exact timing of intercourse/conception can have an influence on a baby’s gender.
Timing methods such as the Shettles Method and the Whelan Method are becoming extremely popular.
Many people’s successful personal experiences using these techniques have lead them to become some of the most popular natural methods for gender control available today.
Although the timing of intercourse as a tool for gender selection that has been used for centuries there is little modern scientific proof of the validity of such a method.
The question is: “Do they really work”?
The Shettles Method is timing technique used to predetermine baby gender at the point of conception. It is the brainchild of Dr. Landrum Shettles, an eminent physician with a Ph.D. in biology and an M.D. from Johns Hopkins University.
Shettles was a pioneer of in vitro fertilization (IVF) before crating his now famous Shettles Method for natural gender selection. In Vitro actually means “in glass” – hence the now famous phrase “test-tube baby”.
According to Dr. Shettles couples who would like to have a baby girl should have sexual intercourse daily from the end of the woman’s period up to 2-4 days prior to ovulation. The couple should not engage in intercourse again until the woman has entered a period of 2-3 days after ovulation.
This technique which is said to have a 75% success rate for future parents hoping to conceive a girl has been around since the 1960’s. Dr. Shettles believed that timing is the most significant factor in determining gender.
It is the chromosome carrying sperm is what determines the baby’s gender. Although Y-chromosome sperm (boy sperm) swim faster, they normally survive for shorter times compared to their slower X-chromosome sperm (girl sperm) equivalents.
So although female producing sperm swim slower than their male producing counterparts, the girl sperms are both stronger and more resilient.
According to the Shettles’ baby gender selection method, you should have intercourse 2–4 days prior to ovulation if you hope to have a baby girl. This is meant to allow only the girl sperm to fertilize the egg by the time ovulation takes place.
A sure sign of ovulation is usually a clear, egg-yolk like vaginal mucus. Dr. Shettles recommends that if you want to conceive a baby girl, you observe a sex ban during ovulation and for up to 3 days afterwards.
However, there is a downside to this as shunning sexual intercourse during this time may lessen your chances of getting pregnant at all.
The Whelan Method
This method, which was created by Dr. Elizabeth Whelan, is one of the commonly used baby gender selection methods even though it only offers a 57% success rate for future parents who would like to have a girl.
Whelan’s theory differs slightly from Shettles’ only slightly.
Like Shettles, Whelan advises couples to have intercourse 2-3 days pre-ovulation if they hope to have a girl. Although even proponents of the Whelan Method only claim a 57% success rate (which is only slightly higher than a 50/50 chance) many people who have used it claim it is very successful. This may be more due to people who were unsuccessful using not speaking out than anything else. As such, it is hard to tell whether these successes were actually the outcome of the method, or just down to pure luck and probability.
The available amount of research to support the Shettles and Whelan method is limited so it is difficult to prove that either of the two are in any way effective. Since there is no scientific evidence to support the claims of success these methods should not be relied upon alone.
The Scientific Approach for Baby Gender Selection
For many women (and men) taking a chance that you might not get the gender you want through natural means leads them to look for a more scientific method.
There are some major advantages to using artificial means for baby gender selection as outlined below:
- Artificial methods for gender selection are much more effective.
- Traditional sperm-screening techniques have a success rates of 60-70%.
- Techniques such as Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis, while ordinarily used to fix gentic defects, has an almost 100% success rate in gender selection.
Of course there are also major disadvantages to choosing artificial methods over natural ones.
- The obvious downside for many people is that these methods are unnatural.
- They are extremely expensive.
- They can be intrusive.
- They often require multiple treatments.
- You forfeit privacy. They are not private and can involve medical staff (strangers) imposing on your normally very personal space and being privy to personal details.
ALthough the first method may not appear all that scientific there are very real-world medical reasons, when it comes to conception and gender selection, for using diet to change an acidic environment to an alkaline environment within the body as well as for other reasons.
Artificial (unnatural) Techniques
There are a few key artificial approaches of human gender selection based upon modern scientific discoveries.
Below are some of the more established techniques currently being employed by the scientific and medical communities.
These most common of these include:
- The Ericsson Method.
- MicroSort (with IVF or IUI).
- PGD (Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis) with IVF (In Vitro Fertilization).
Unlike natural methods for predetermining the gender of your baby scientific/medical methods often involve complicated medical equipment and require expertise from specialist medical care prationers.
Therefore almost all of these procedures must be sanctioned by the medical establishment.
In most cases in order for a gender selection method to be considered scientific it must meet the following criteria:
- It requires special medical equipment often used in a sterile environment.
- Is it used only in special healthcare establishments.
- It is only administered by highly skilled, fully trained and accredited medical practitioners.
From a scientific standpoint most artificial methods for gender allocation are extremely complex. Treatments such as IVF use artificial methods to fertilize a female ovary and then use medical equipment to insert the fertilized egg into the uterus of the future mother.
How To Conceive A Girl Through Modern Medicine
PGD (with IVF), which is the abbreviation for Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (with In Vitro Fertilization), seems to be the best way of conceiving a baby of a chosen gender.
Although many women use IVF merely as a means to get pregnant, without thought or concern about gender, when IVF is combined with PGD gender is almost 100% guaranteed. It has been found to have an incredible success rate of 100% – if the success rate is used as the only criterion, and if there are no technical errors. The only time the gender would be different from that chosen would be due to human error.
The Ericsson Method
The Ericsson Method, developed by Dr. Ronald Ericsson, claims to have a greater than 71% success rate at predetermining the sex of a baby. However, recent studies put the percentage much higher – at least when it comes to girls.
It has been known for some time that X chromosome sperm swim much slower than Y chromosome sperm. Male producing sperm with the Y chromosome swim at a faster rate than the female producing X chromosome sperm.
By placing the sperm atop a “column” of increasingly thicker layers of albumin Ericsson found that as the sperm swam down the solution the faster male producing sperm would reach their destination quicker. Thus after some time was allowed to pass it was possible to separate the faster sperm from the slower sperm.
Thus in order to have a baby girl the would-be-mother would then be artificially estimated with the slower sperm.
The Ericsson Method first came into use in the mid 1970s. Although Ericsson himself claims the method is effective 85% of the time many medical experts openly doubt this.
Microsort (not to be confused with Microsoft) have developed an innovative software that can identify X and Y chromosome sperm based on their fluorescence signature.
Like the Ericsson Method, (although with a lot more success), the sperm carrying the desired chromosome for the chosen gender are separated from its opposite.
This sperm is then used to artificially inseminate the woman using conventional medical means.
Microsort claim to have a 93% success rate for girls and 82% success rate for boys.
PGD (with IVF)
This is how this strategy works:
- Eggs and sperm samples are collected from the future parents (or donors if needed).
- In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is then used to develop, under laboratory condition, potential embryos.
- Once a healthy embryo, with the chosen gender, is selected artificial means are used to implant it into the future mother’s uterus.
It should be noted that although it is expensive PGD (with IVF) has an almost 100% success rate for having a girl.
We hope we have shown you how to conceive a girl using all the best methods available. Please feel free to leave a comment and open a discussion on these topics.
